Life Card- Our life card has stated that we will be moving and this will with no doubt cause stress on the mother. During Pregnancy excessive stress is known to cause mental issues to the child such as increased risk for preterm birth and low birth weight,  stress is thought to contribute to the racial disparities in infant birth weight, infant death and premature Birth
Time Line
 
Week 8: Your baby will be about 8-11 mm CR by the end of the week. The baby's hind brain is clearly visible. This week the baby's gonads will become either testes or ovaries. Movement begins to occur. Elbows appear and the process of ossification (hardening of the bones) begins.
Week 9: Your baby is now approximately 13-17 mm head to butt length, or about 0.51 - 0.66 inches. S/he also weighs in at 1 gram. Toe rays are present as the toes begin to form. Gonads have become testes (for boys) or ovaries (for girls). Baby will move away if touched through the uterine wall, and can spontaneously move as well.
Week 10:  The baby now enters its fetal period. The average size is approximately 27-35 mm head to butt length, or 1.06-1.38 inches. S/he weighs in at 4 grams, or 4 paper clips. Tiny toes have formed. The eyes are largely open, but the eyelids are beginning to fuse, and will stay that way until
25-27 weeks. External genitalia is beginning to be identified. Ears are formed, as is the upper lip.
Week 11: If you have seen pictures of baby at this stage you will notice that the head is about 1/2 of the body size. This will change as the baby grows. The iris will begin to develop this week and finger nails appear. The baby weighs about 7 grams.
Week 12: While your baby's brain is not the same size it will be at birth, it does have the same structure. Bile is being secreted by this time. S/he weighs about 14 grams and is approximately 3.54 inches in total length.
Your baby has its reflexes and also practice movements in the digestive tract.
Week 13: There are a lot of things going on this week! All twenty teeth have formed and are waiting. Your baby approximately weighs in at 1 ounce (28.3 grams).
Week 14: The baby is now about 4.92 inches. Your baby is now producing urine and actually urinating into the amniotic fluid. It also can practice "breathing" the amniotic fluid in and out of its lungs.
Week 15: Your baby may have developed the habit of sucking his or her thumb! The skin is very thin and you can see the blood vessels clearly underneath.The baby is about 70 grams. The scalp hair pattern is developing. And the heart is pumping about 25 quarts of blood a day. This will increase to about 300 at term.
Week 16: Your baby's nails are well formed, and some babies are even in need of having their nails trimmed at birth. The ears have also moved from the neck to the head. Your baby is emptying his or her bladder every 40-45 minutes. The limb movements are becoming more coordinated. Your baby is about 3 ounces (85 grams) and 6.3 inches (16 cms).

 Cell Differentiations the word for when cells begin to differentiate. Cell differentiation is a process in which a non-specific  cell develops into a certain  type of cell in response to triggers from the body or the cell. This allows single celled organisms to develop into multi-cellular organisms.



The steps in Cell Differentiation are the:
           Morula stage,
           the Blastula stage,
           the Gastrula stage,
          and the Neurula stage.




 Germ Layers:
Endoderm

The endoderm produces tissues within the lungs, thyroid, and pancreas.
The endoderm is one of the germ layers formed during embryogenesis. The endoderm creates: the stomach, the colon, the liver, the pancreas, the urinary bladder, the lining of the urethra, the epithelial parts of trachea, the lungs, the pharynx, the thyroid, the parathyroid, and the intestines.

Mesoderm


The mesoderm helps in the production of cardiac muscle, skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, tissues within the kidneys, and red blood cells.
The mesoderm germ layer forms in the embryos of triploblastic animals. During gastrulation, some of the cells move inward and contribute to the mesoderm, an additional layer between the endoderm and the ectoderm.
The mesoderm creates: skeletal muscle, the skeleton, the dermis of skin, connective tissue, the urogenital system, the heart, blood (lymph cells), and the spleen.

Ectoderm
 
The ectoderm produces tissues within the epidermis, helps in the formation of neurons within the brain, and builds melanocytes. The ectoderm is the start of a tissue that covers the body surfaces. It emerges first and forms from the outside  of the germ layers. The ectoderm makes: the central nervous system, the lens of the eye, cranial and sensory, the ganglia and nerves, pigment cells, head connective tissues, the epidermis, hair, and mammary glands.

                Today we discovered what our now daubed  "bio babies"  sex will be ( once again this is an assignment for bio class). And from Discovering this I felt kind of funny, happy but at the same time shocked I thought for sure it would be a girl.
                Unfortunately not all parents to be are so lucky, Miscarriages often take place. However for people whom this happens to or who are unable to have kids. Adoption, Artificial insemation, and other techniques exsist.

Your Baby's Growth and Development
Your baby will be implanting during pregnancy week 4 into the uterine lining. Fetal development is still in the earliest stages at this point. By now the blastocyst or ball of cells that is your baby will be imbedding deeper and deeper into the lining of the uterus. The amniotic cavity is forming and the placenta is starting to form.
As women continue to grow and expand during your pregnancy week by week, the placenta will help nourish and support your baby during the nine months of pregnancy. It consists of vascular networks and blood from the moms body that helps transport oxygen and nutrients to the fetus. There are several different layers of cells developing in your body, which will eventually develop into your baby's organs and other body parts. Other layers will form the nervous system including the brain.
A pregnancy of 4 weeks is often noted as the beginning of the embryonic period. During your pregnancy at 4 weeks, your baby's organs will start developing. The early weeks of pregnancy are considered a critical time of development. Any exposure to harmful substances during pregnancy week 4 or later in the first trimester will most likely to cause damage to or harm your unborn child. It is extremely important that the mom does everything possible to try to avoid exposure to any potential pollutants or toxins during this time.

MOM'S CHANGES.
Moms might actually start realizing some changes at 4 weeks pregnant. Some women start to feel a little bit tired during pregnancy at 4 weeks. Many women liken the symptoms they are feeling during this stage to those they feel around the time of menstruation. You may in fact experience nothing other than some menstrual symptoms, including a bit of nausea and even some cramping

TWINS OR TRIPLETS? THE POSSIBILITIES.
These days, about one in 32 births are twin births. This rate has gone up 65 percent since 1980, and it's more than double the rate among women who conceive without medical assistance — one in 89.

The rise in triplets and quadruplets is even more dramatic. Between 1980 and 1998, the rate of triplets and higher number multiple births shot up by more than 400 percent, but it's crept back down over the past few years as fertility treatments have become more refined. In 2003, one in 535 births resulted in triplets, quadruplets, or more.

Meanwhile, the likelihood of having identical twins is about one in 250. This rate hasn't changed over the decades and is remarkably constant all over the world.
MIDWIFE VS. DOCTOR
One of the best ways to decide is to find a practice that has both midwives and doctors. Many facilities will allow you to rotate between doctor and midwife until you decide your preference for delivery. Perhaps the biggest reason women choose a midwife over a doctor is the difference in approach to labor. Generally speaking, doctors are present only for the actual delivery of the baby and periodic checks through labor. Midwives are typically present through the duration of labor and childbirth. Choosing between a doctor and a midwife is a very personal decision. It may help to write down your goals for pregnancy and delivery and see which model of care your goals for pregnancy fall into.

BABY AT HOME?
Yes your baby can be born at home, in fact the baby can be born just about anywhere to include the back of your car (often times this is an accident and is not intended)

                In Biology.... We have received partners for the "baby project". Upon doing so we were given a sesame seed to represent the "child" we will be having.  In an effort to learn about the changes that occur to the Mom, Unborn child, and Dad during pregnancy, we have been asked to create Mommy/Daddy Blogs. Well here goes...


          During the first 4 weeks of pregnancy many changes affect the Mom, Unborn child, and Dad. while the Dads changes remain strictly physiological, the mom and child also undergo physical changes.
          The Dad during pregnancy is psychological plagued by the fact that this is his child and that he will be a father. While dealing with this emotional turmoil he must also assist his spouse with her struggles.
          The Mom during the first 4 weeks of pregnancy must not only deal with the emotions that she will be a mommy, but she must also coop with several physical changes. The mother may start showing early pregnancy symptoms like bloating, cramping, and mood swings. She might also experience implantation bleeding and she might feel pressure in her abdomen. Her breasts may become tender and even bigger.  But, these effects will also worsen for the mom as the pregnancy continues.
           The most change during the first 4 weeks occurs to the unborn child. as big as a poppy seed, the cells that will develop into the baby has entered the uterus. Once there it will undergo a division by  splitting into two groups. Half will become the baby, while the other half forms the placenta. The multilayered embryo then begins to grow into specialized parts of the baby's body. The inner layer or the endoderm, will develop into the baby's digestive system, liver, and lungs. The middle layer, called the mesoderm, will become the baby's heart, sex organs, bones, kidneys, and muscles. The outer layer, or ectoderm, will form the baby's nervous system, hair, skin, and eyes.

Science Class Role Play Task 2

          Continuing our work in the role playing of  Biology class, my group and I have been asked to create our own  statements on Two questions. The Questions are as follows: "Should there be government regulations requiring genetically engineered foods to be labeled?"and "Should there be government regulations to protect the environment from genetically engineered crops?"
Based on my groups views and the data presented by the groups environmentalist, legislature, and consumer advocate. My statement is this:
          Genetically engineered foods have many advantages in today's primarily urbane society. These foods may be the solution to many issues which plague our would today, such as would hunger, and a growing lack of farmers. However they also pose several threats to our environment, economy, and health.
          In recognizing that there are pros and cons to Genetically engineered food, we believe that the governments of this earth should put into an effective place, certain regulations as to the production and distribution of The engineered crop. while this may prove to be irksome to the farming industry, these regulations will prevent situations from arising. Examples of what we wish to prevent are Super Bugs which are immune to pesticides, diseases wiping out entire crops of plants, human diseases, human allergies and the spread of the mutant gene into other previously un-engineered organisms. Our recommended and desired regulations from the U.N. and in particular the U.S. government are: Separation of crops which have been mutated from other crops ( this we believe will prevent the spread of the genes), Burning of remaining plant peaces at end of season rather than simply rotating soil especially during crop rotations ( This will help replenish soils nutrients as well as prevent the spread of the mutation), and required licensing on farmers whom may wish to grow genetically engineered crops ( this will ensure that the farmers understand and agree to adhere to the other regulations).
          In the issue of distribution of genetically engineered foods there are presently several problems . These problems have lead to the debate of whether or not Genetically Engineered food should be labeled. Issues with the mutated foods distribution include; should the food be separated from other foods (once again this is to prevent spread of  genes to other organisms), and labeling of food (This will allow people to choose whether or not if they would wish to eat said food types. The government should require we believe labeling on all mutated food, as knowledge of what people are eating is a "certain unalienable right" after all it is there body that has to pay the price for what they eat. The labels addressed above should include what company or laboratory that produced the mutation, proof of licensing, Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval , and a brief explanation of as to how the food was mutated and why. These labels will help deal with the control of the mutation, the safety of the consumers, and should appease the rights of the consumers.
          While there is good and bad to every advancement, we firmly believe that Genetically engineered foods pros greatly outweigh the cons if and only if certain regulations are put into place. These should include labeling and how the crops are produced.
     Today in living Enviorment we continued our roleplay. I am still a scientist. However for today we work in a group in which me and other "scientist" had to create a group statement on GM foods. Here goes...
     
      We belive that the risks of GM foods outwiegh the benefits of the food as in many cases the food has proven to be more dangerous to both living organisms, the enviorment, and the economy. The introduction of new GM foods often results in new allergens or diseases and can lead to "super organisms" which will inevitavly destroy the GM crop. While GM foods have benefits, such as herbocide resistance, they do not tally up to enough to outwiegh the cons.
